In 1942, Fernando Van Zeller Guedes founded Sociedade Comercial dos Grandes Vinhos de Mesa de Portugal, now known as Sogrape Vinhos. In the same year, the Mateus brand was created, which brought the company worldwide fame.
These days, the brand is represented in 125 countries and is the most exported among Portuguese wine brands. In the early 21st century, the billionth bottle of Mateus was sold, and the Sogrape Vinhos company moves beyond.
The vibrant taste of Mateus wines produced from the original local grape varieties, such as Malvasia, Arinto, Tinta Barroca, Rufete, and Baga, along with the characteristic shape of the bottle, reminiscent of a flask from the World War I times, set it apart from the rest and largely determined the fate of the brand. Thanks to the perfectionism, persistence, and hard work of Fernando Van Zeller Guedes, Mateus wines have gained popularity year after year far beyond Portugal.
